The need to preempt Iran and export gas to Egypt was the reason the government gave to push through its controversial plan for Israel's natural gas. Now, this reason may no longer exist.08:52 31.08.15 | 1 comments
Hezbollah could no more take over the Lebanon than the IRA could N Ireland, for the same reason: too many people opposed to them and prepared to fight back. They are even the second party among the Shia if I remember. If you were right, Hez would have emerged triumphant from the Lebanese civil war. They didn't, they were just one more faction in a tag wrestling match. The problem is that Israel has demonised Hezbollah for so long, as many right-wingers did the IRA, Israelis cannot accept that the position is not as starkly black-and-white as they fondly believe and wish. Wiser minds have ensured that the IRA is now in a democratic power-sharing arrangement in N Ireland, similar to Hezbollah contesting the Lebanese elections and power-sharing in the Lebanese government. Far from being in de facto control of the country, they are a minority party in a land of minority parties.
