Hezbollah could no more take over the Lebanon than the IRA could N Ireland, for the same reason: too many people opposed to them and prepared to fight back. They are even the second party among the Shia if I remember. If you were right, Hez would have emerged triumphant from the Lebanese civil war. They didn't, they were just one more faction in a tag wrestling match. The problem is that Israel has demonised Hezbollah for so long, as many right-wingers did the IRA, Israelis cannot accept that the position is not as starkly black-and-white as they fondly believe and wish. Wiser minds have ensured that the IRA is now in a democratic power-sharing arrangement in N Ireland, similar to Hezbollah contesting the Lebanese elections and power-sharing in the Lebanese government. Far from being in de facto control of the country, they are a minority party in a land of minority parties.
