Even Herzl spoke of the "state of the Jews" and not a "Jewish state". The intention was always that the Jews needed a place to live so that they would have all the freedom and the safety that the Enlightenment in Europe promised but did not deliver. So, they set their eyes on Palestine and, at the same time, fought for true freedom and equality in all other countries. We Jews don't need a "Jewish state" but we need a democratic France and a democratic England and a democratic Argentina and a democratic Palestine where we can live without being oppressed and without being oppressors. Zionism is a roadblock to be overcome on the way to Jewish emancipation.
