Ashkenazi has not been such a schlemiel as Halutz. The performance of the IDF command staff in Cast Lead was far more competent than in the Second Lebanon War. The failures in Cast Lead and the Flotila Fiasco were results of the goals and strategy demanded by politicians above Gen. Ashkenazi's position. Thus if there was a failure by him, especially in the Flotilla matter, it would be failure to stand up to incompetent decisions at the political level. Mindless clicking of heels and thoughtlessly following of inept, incompetent and self-destructive orders is not one I used to associate with the IDF. Once there was a time when the IDF applied intelligence to problems instead of blind obedience.
