the Soviet Union wasn't saved by their warheads, true... but that certainly doesn't make them useless. SU collapsed because it was a union of such different peoples that it could only be held together by force, and Gorbarchevs Glasnost weakened the police state. Logically, nuclear weapons don't save a state from structural collapse, but they do protect against being conquered. That is why Israel needs its Nukes, and also why I think Ahmadinejad wants them too. In initiating Iraq war, unfortunately Bush sent the clear message to Syria, Iran and North Korea: USA won't take you seriously as an adversary unless you already have Nukes. I kind of doubt Iran would launch a first strike on Israel if they had the bomb, but Israel would obviously prefer not to have to trust in that. By the way, it is rather disappointing what stance Iran continues to take towards Israel. Under Pahlavi, they had friendly relations, and Israel supported Iran during the war with Iraq.
