Sure, there's always been a Jewish presence. But, like it or not, the Jewish presence shrank over the centuries while the Arab presence grew. As for it being a colonial state: early Zionists were quite clear that the Arab population would have to be cleared in order for their project to be successful. In other words, they wanted to replace one dominant population and culture with another; the textbook definition of colonialism.
