Your remarks about the futility of the peace process are perfectly valid, but this meeting fulfilled the immediate political needs of both leaders -- and fooled neither of them. In the run-up to the fall elections, Obama cannot afford to give the Republicans grounds for saying he is hostile to Israel. Netanyahu needs to demonstrate that he still has good relations with Washington. Each got what he wanted. Certainly the meeting was not a step towards much of anything -- but no one was fooled. Notice the absence of any joint press conference. They didn't even PLAN to agree. They know perfectly well they don't.
