Strenger really hits rock bottom when he assumes that Hawking has taken the decision to cancel his visit to Israel because of succumbing to pressure; that he has a weak mind. I rather think that Hawking is quite capable of drawing his own conclusions re Israel and seeing through the illogic in Strenger's open letter for that matter. We do what we think we work. Sometimes its the carrot and sometimes its the stick and sometimes a combination of both. I have no doubt there are many Israelis who genuinely see the occupation as Strenger does but so what. For whatever reason, they have been unable to influence their State to see things as they do so why not try something different. After all the occupation has been around for decades and there is absolutely no indications that Israel either wants to or is capable of bringing it to an end.
