No Ze'ev Schiff Israel was defeated in Sderot by its own 21st century warfare against the Palestinian people. Throughout history people have always shown a deep sense of commitment to the protection of civilians and the powerless from the powerful. Indeed, this concern has guided all our inter-national treaties and laws and it is deeply rooted in the Geneva Conventions and of course in the Nuremburg Tribunal (transgressions against the laws of conduct of war). Hence Israel cannot bully or bash a civilian population with stones and homemade Qassam rockets with its 21st century warfare. Nor can it use collective punishment against them such as home demolitions, curfews and closure or starve them or expell them from their land. This is all totally unacceptable today from any state and thus my recommendation is for Israel to get out of the war business altogether like so many other states have and accept the Saudi Initiative and make peace instead of war.
