Whether or not there was a huge jewish exodus from Egypt is an important (or at least interesting) aspect of history (unlike for example whether or not this exodus was preceded by a set of divine plagues, which is of interest to few people other than theologists). For example, Benin (an Israeli PM) actually suggested that the jews built the pyramids (as slaves). Such claims deserve historical scrutiny, as they relate to historical facts and not just religious dogma.
