Of course the Chabad rabbis go after the rich donors. The normal rabbi is hired by an existing synagogue with a membership which supports it to the extent necessary. Chabad rabbis are given no seed money. They move into an area and have to build a community and a place of worship from scratch. They need money to live, to rent space for a synagogue, to acquire a sefer Torah and siddurim and tallitot and chairs and tables, an ark, etc. - the basic furniture of a synagogue. A first year's salary ($40,000), chairs ($800), tables (400), a Torah ($15-20,000 for a used one), a cabinet ($500), food for kiddushes ($2500), rent for a storefront ($24,000) you're getting close to $100,000 just in startup costs. Where do you think they're going to get this? A bank? To start up a church? With no membership? They go to rich donors.
