There does not seem to be any real reason why Olmert needs a peace conference, all it can do to Israel is cause problems. Tosefta babbles in his usual fashion about how Bush needs to have this conference for some obscure reason, but this is not really true, just talking about the conference serves the purpose just as well. As far as the arab govt's in the area, they are rightly more concerned with islamic terrrorist groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, than they are about the welfare of the palestinian people. Abbas was the only possible winner in this, and that would only have been if he could have offered Israel something that they really wanted in return for israeli concessions on final status. For a few days that seemed remotely possible, with the destruction of Hamas being the Abbas's "trading card", but that moment has passed, along with any real justification for the conference. No peace in our time, no palestinian state in our time.
