Palastinain will elect whomever they think is most likely to get them what they want and whether those people are terrorists or not is of no concern to them. If Israel had wiped out Hamas, Palastinains would determine that they had to deal with a real two state solution, and Abbas would have had enough cover to cut a deal. A real two state solution is one in which there is a Jewsih state and a Palastinian one, but the only one Abbas is strong enough to offer is a "pure" Palastinain state devoid of Jews and a heterogenous Israel in which is on its way to being a majority Arab state. But as Hamas looks like a plausable alternative by "standing up" to Israel, Hamas gets credit and Abbas loses credit. Yet another reason why the status quo is unsustainable.
