Agreed that the Quartet is a more honest broker than US could ever be but if the US could not extract a settlement freeze, there is no chance that Israel will take one bit of notice of the Quartet. This is just another recipe for endless negotiations while Israel creates facts on the ground. Obama is in a hard place but that comes with the territory when you are President of the US. The US in unlikely to cut aid to the Palestinians despite some members of Congress calling for this measure. This is not the time for the Palestinians to lose their nerve. They can always approach the GA after the US vetos in the SC. The main game is always going to be in the US. Israel will continue on with its long term plan of acquiring control over all of the W/B, with small pockets of land where Palestinians may have limited self autonomy; the reservations of the 21 Century and even the threat of ICC will not deter, unless the US makes it clear that it must eventually dump Israel unless Israel dumps its plans for Greater Israel. This is still a long way to go - there is no easy fix. The Palestinian approach to the UN will not create a State but it will be an important tool in whittling away the control Israel has, regardless of what it does, has over US Congress and US public opinion.
