The hope that Hamas will follow in the steps of the ANC and the IRA in renouncing terrorism is little more than a naive daydream; it overlooks the crucial differences between the goals of the IRA and ANC on one hand, and of Hamas on the other. The IRA, to begin with, never denied that the UK had a right to exist; it only advocated a change in the UK's borders. The ANC, furthermore, was never really a terrorist organization at all- it simply advocated, most of the time through completely legal forms of dissent, the end of the inhumane Apartheid regime. Hamas' goals are limited neither to the attainment of equal rights for their people (in which case they would be comparable to the ANC) nor even to a drastic change in the borders of Israel/Palestine (in which case they might resemble the IRA.) Hamas' stated goal is and always has been the destruction of the State of Israel, the expulsion of its Jewish citizens, and its replacement by a religiously homogenous theocracy. These goals are inherently far more extreme than those of either the ANC or the IRA; therefore any comparison between the former and the latter is absurd.
