In the 1770's there were no states, there were British colonies only. And by 1830, every state had abolished their established religions. I don't see the relevancy at all of using US examples of 200 yrs. ago that have long since been abandoned. You mentioned your belief that hindus and muslims weren't considered. There was a debate in the NY legislature over the ability of the state to fund a chaplain for the legislature in the 1820's. It was voted down. That debate specifically mentions those other two religions.
