So basically, the police will be able to hold suspects for up to nine hours without charge rather than the current three. In the UK it used to be 24 hours for anything until the bus and tube bombings, when it was increased to 72 hours for a while; 9 hours hardly seems draconian in comparison. Nevertheless it sets a dangerous precedent and temporary emergency legislation has a habit of becoming permanent in even the most liberal of states.
