Nick Cohen, in today's Observer (www.observer. guardian.co.uk) makes a much more cogent analysis than this one. Cohen says that Islamism springs from Islamic sources, and is by its nature violent and anti-western. He also says that the vast majority of the victims of Islamism have been Muslims, deemed not-Muslim- enough. It's odd that a columnist in an Israeli newspaper needs to be told that Islamist violence predates the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The predominant feeling, here in America, is that the struggle against Islamism will resemble the struggles against fascism and communism: long and difficult, but we will win in the end.
