is the IDF a state unto itself? Haaretz always proclaims its strong belief in democracy. The military in a democracy is subordinate to the civilian leadership. even if you don't care for Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government, it is the elected government which sets policy, not the IDF chief of staff nor its leadership. Their job is to implement the directions given to them by the civilian leadership. They should have no say in determining policy. The idea of a General telling David Ben Gurion what to do would have led to prompt dismissal of that General. Now is the opportunity for Haaretz to stand for Israeli democracy by supporting the elected government and its prerogatives.
