The Sinai is historically the gate to Egypt. Invaders as well as liberators must traverse it. During Israel's years of occupation. the Sinai was regarded as abuffre zone to protect Isreal. That view was clearly stated in the treaty that Israel and its western backers imposed on Sadat, the former dictator who signed the deal but never submistted to a popular referendum becuse its rejection was certain, even with the usual baloot rigging practiced in Egypt. If Egypt is to protect itself against Israel pending a just peace that address Palestinians right, it must settle the Sinai. New cities should be established, with international involvement such as open zones and a bridge and a tunnel links to Jordan and saudi arabia. Peace must be global and Israel must integrate in the region as a democratic multifaith Palestine with solid guarantees for all.
