Unfortunately for him, the "status quo" isn't acceptable to the Palestinians for obvious reasons. He came to power with plans to keep building more settlements and create facts on the ground for another 4 years while negotiations go nowhere. In the meantime, he would throw the Palestinians a few economic "bones" by removing a few checkpoints and approving a couple of projects. To his dismay, Abbas hasn't allowed Netanyahu to play him like a fool as other Israeli PMs have done. Israelis themselves have become complacent thanks in large part to Abbas's security efforts on their behalf in the West Bank. Now that there are no more suicide bombers, what do they have to gain from peace? It seems...nothing.
