Nations do not conduct themselves like Don Quixote of the song, and do not pursue impossible goals. The Zealots of the 1st century rebelled against reality and caused the Jewish people to be dispersed for 2000 years, while the Zionist realists of the 20th century were able to gather back the Exiles. Requiring legitimacy by having the Palestinians and the world recognize Israel as the nation-state of the Jews is an impossible dream, and for many reasons. 1. We are moving beyond the age of nation states. Example: EU. Where do you see a country where some ethnic group has more rights than others? The last one was South Africa. The world believes in Democracy, not Ethnocracy. 2. The Islamic world itself does not recognize ethnic rights. "There are no nations in Islam" said the Prophet Muhammad. The different Islamic countries today are seen as an unfortunate temporary situation until a Khalif takes over. 3. The core Israeli wish, however misstated, is that the Arabs should recognize that the Jews have had a history in the region, that they used to own the holyland and are merely coming back. But this is a call for a historical determination. Political leaders are not historians and have no authority even if they accept such a claim (wink wink). 4. Even if the Arabs believe in the history of the Jews as the Jews see it, they have their own valid claim, such as: Where do you have a law entitling a people to reclaim an ancient possession it lost in what is a common historical occurence? 5. Even if such a unique law is accepted, the Palestinians have another valid claim: They are also descendents of the ancient residents of the area. Why should the Jews have more rights than them?// CONCLUSION: At best, Israel can legitimize the SHARING of the Land with the Palestinians.
