If Netanyahu had to build or announce plans for building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, this is an optimal time for him. The US is about to have her Congressional Elections and Obama is politically unable to react forcefully. The problem is that the US elections will be over soon, and Obama will remember who undermined the peace process he had initiated. Since it is quite clear that Netanyahu is unable to proceed with the peace agreement, Obama will have to use some harsher pressure, and I am sure he will, because some things are more important to him than re-elections. (Obama is not your regular politician.) The UN recognizing Palestine independence and admitting her as a member state can be accomplished just by the US not exercizing a veto, which is entirely up to Obama. Netanyahu wins a small tactical move, but is on the way of losing big.
