When I made aliyah, there were 10 people in my ulpan who got grants from Nefesh b'Nefesh. Of those 10 people, 5 of them were given grant checks that bounced. Even worse, the checks were in US dollars, which meant that it took three weeks to process the checks (so if you needed the money right away to set up an apartment, you were SOL...and given that so many of the checks bounced, you were kind of SOL anyway). However, Nefesh b'Nefesh did helpfully recommend a check cashing firm if you needed the money faster. Problem is, when some people went to the check cashing firm, they were told, "We don't know why NBN thinks we work with them. We don't. Too many of their checks have returned on us."
