Today Western states are pluralistic---you name the state---America, Italy, England, Germany etc. All religious groups are known by their nationality---American, Italian, English, German not by their religion: Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Muslim or what have you. Nationality is a general term that relates one's relationship to the law of the land, not to one's religious beliefs. Israel wants to both eat its cake and have it also. Under such conditions it can claim to be a democracy within the framework of Western criteria, but it wont be. Israel is in effect saying that "citizens" of Israel who are not Jewish are by virtue of the law second class and are not entitled to all the rights of Jewish citizens. Imagine the uproar in the U.S. if only Americans of Christian persuasion were privy to all the laws of the land with non-Christians left to tolerate the idiosyncratic whims of Christians.
