A patriot loves his own country, and seeks to enhance its success. A nationalist hates other countries, continuously seeing real and imagined threats to his own. A tribalist hates any who are different in any way from his conception of himself — save, of course, himself. Most of the most barbaric evil that have been rendered by one group of H. sapiens to another in the last several centuries have been tribalism wrapped in nationalism, with a cartoonish masquerade of patriotism. Ironically, these groups more often than not claim some religious justification for their acts that would be forcefully condemned by their religion's founders and small-o orthodox believers.
