In the USA, it's still common practice for public school students to stand and state the "Pledge of Allegiance". Those that refuse to stand and say the pledge are not penalized, but they are required to at least be quiet. Regarding prayer in public schools, many, many schools require a "moment of silence". That moment is at the discretion of the local school district.
