Many years ago, I was shooting the breeze about World War II (not the Holocaust) late at night with a non-Jewish buddy at a university in Canada. We were joined by two sisters, Canadians of Lithuanian extraction and daughters of a very prominent math professor at that university. My friend started talking about the Jewish resistance in France. The girls looked at each other and smiled. "The Jews of Lithuania," they informed us, "deserved exactly what they got." They then expounded at length on the subject. It was the single most egregious example of anti-Semitism I have ever come across in my life.
