My congressman holds "town hall meetings" every couple of months. He seldom mentioned Israel, but one time me did say that Israel was the only democracy in the mideast. That was 18 months ago. - Comment - Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper

I stood and told him that I don't know where he got that idea. Israel does not have equal rights for women. Israel does not have equal rights for minorities. Israel has a pervasive state religion. Israel has a military censor on the media. Israel has no bill of rights. Israel targets leftists and human rights groups. He didn't argue but he did call Israel a vital ally. I had a lot more to say but sat down and let him off the hook. In the few meetings I have goe to since then, he has mentioned Israel a couple of times, but he has never called Israel the only democracy in the mideast and, in fact, he has not called Israel a democracy at all. This is how progress is made. One small step at a time. Next time we will address this "vital ally" stuff.
