No hareidi rabbi hijacked the Rabbanut at gunpoint. If "they" have gained control over it, perhaps it is because the hareidi candidates were viewed as the most capable. With their incredible emphasis on intensive Torah study, it's not really surprising that they are producing more qualified candidates for positions that require a great deal of knowledge and integrity. Possibly others can do it too, but presently, the hareidi scholars are considered most qualified, and are filling many official positions, including Chief Rabbi. So the demand to abolish the Rabbinate smacks more of sour grapes than honesty and integrity.
