Transferring autocratic powers from the military to a democratically elected government can only be good - provided that democracy is preserved and the rights of minorities are respected. The author is (in my mind rightly) concerned that the Egyptian government may be moving slowly but steadily towards a muslim state where muslim principles take priority over minority rights. The present Israeli government widely proclaims its policy of strengthening Israel as a Jewish state, and steady progress in this is evident from the recent spate of laws and proposed laws that trample on the rights of minorities. At least in Egypt there is a strong reaction from the people who feel threatened. Have Israel's minorities already been subdued?
