Olmert is not the person who has enough vision or initiative to say any of these things. And there is no reason why an Arab leader could not take initiative and approach Israel with the same suggestions and proposals. By the same token that you are calling upon Israel to admit to its part in the refugee problem, the Arab states must be called upon to recognize theirs. The Arab countries worked to persuade the Palestinians to leave in 1948, and then brushed their hands of responsibility afterwards. Israel cannot assume all the blame. I suggest you write a companion piece in which you describe the wisdom, compassion, recognition, and change of mindset that you expect the Arab leaders to initiate towards us. When each of us finds a leader who will come forward with such approaches, both sides will be able to hope for something better.

Why we don't know how to pick our leaders

Our craving for ideology means that we are partial to ideological leaders. But we need leaders who will make smart decisions that are aligned with the public interest.
