First, Dr. Rice does what she regards is in the best interest of America. You may disagree, but she has to worry about Iran's nuclear ambitions, Syria's and Iran's interference in the affairs of Lebanon, and with their threat to the stability of the region, which is of crucial starategic interest to the United States. She has to worry about renewed Russian interest in the reion, which is in direct opposition to American interests. She has to worry about Hamas intrensigence, which admittedly, and unfortunately, she and the administration did not forsee when they pushed for democratic elections. She knows that Israel is the most reliable ally America has in the Middle East. She knows that finding a solution to the conflict is almost impossible in the present climate, for the reasons that I stated above. America may have made a mistake in going to war in Iraq, but even if it was a mistake, the past cannot be undone, any more than the Carter administration's mistake in Iran.
