Mr.Ayalon?s father?s side are Russian Jews; his paternal grand-mother and her family are all Greek Jews from the Island of Crete. When the Nazis invaded Greece in 1943, the Turkish diplomats in the island helped her and her family with hundreds of other Jews to be transferred to the Island of Rhodes from where Turkish ships took them to Istanbul. Mr.Ayalan?s grandmother and family stayed there for 2 years. At the end of the war, they went to the than British colony of Cyprus waiting to be transferred to the British Protectorate of Palestine. His paternal grandmother and his aunts have been saved by Turkish diplomats: like the one he hoped to humiliate in vain. According to the records in N.S. Documentation Centre in Ludwigsburg (Germany) and Yog Ashem Centre (I don?t know if this is misspelled Yad Washem or another Centre) in Washington and Tel Aviv, Turks saved the highest number of Jews during the Nazis era between 1939-45: around 275.000 souls against the second best, the Americans who only saved 78.000 individuals from the occupied territories.
