In spite of the recent mellowing of Hamas' rhetoric, I have yet to hear anything which goes against their Charter. PM Haniyeh still refuses to accept the conditions for direct Western aid to the PA: recognition of Israel, renunciation of terrorism, and acceptance of previous interim agreements. Furthermore, the ultimate goal of Hamas remains to "raise the flag of Allah over every square inch of Palestine" (including Israel) and Jihad is declared to be the only way to do this. I think that Mr. Zvi Bar'el is trying to read too much into Hamas' switch from inciteful hate-speech in a mosque or public rally to the more "polite" phraseology of politics and diplomacy. On the other hand, there is a small chance that Hamas might emerge as a partner for peace, but they better hurry up about it. Israel is not holding her breath and will continue with building the security barrier and with "unilateral convergence". To paraphrase a well-known quote, "Beware of Hamas bearing gifts."
