Almost everything the Harel writes is quite correct (my one quibble is the statement about Dahlan - Dahlan Certainly *did* have real power, it's just that he was weaker than his enemies), but it is worth adding that everything he says is thoroughly well known to the US and Israeli leadership. Abbas has always been ineffective, and for this reason statements of support to him are only lip service. What is going on is the establishment of a functioning Palestinian Autonomy in the West Bank. Security will be Israel's monopoly, while civilian affairs will be run by a non-ideological regime. After Israel cleans up and reoccupies the Gaza strip, the Autonomy rule will be extended to Gaza. Hamas will end up in the same place where the Muslim Brotherhood of Syria is at today.
