This IS the basis of things. Women feel "left on the shelf" = the longer they stay unmarried, the lower their self-esteem and social status. Men are "not sure" = once they have what they want, i.e. a cleaner, a mother, a cook and availability of free sex at any time they desire they don't see why they SHOULD marry (quite right too). Women are looking for security in marriage and so are men, but of a different kind. If the social pressures were removed I think things would have still remained the same. Marriage is another form of tribalism which is the oldest survival mechanism we have. Religion and social pressures are a fluff covering our ancient insecurities.
