This gentleman's remarks are not surprising, as the Ukraine has had it's disagreements with Moscow. The Soviet Union, as a Communist state, was burdened by its hostility to religion and missionary Communism as a secular religion. These burdens are lifted from Russia, and it can base it's foreign policy on their national interest. I don't think a hostile Iran close to its borders would be in their national interest. As to Afghanistan, I don't think the Taliban would be considered Islamic moderates.
