As someone living within the Litvish/ Yekkish Haredi world, I can see that with each generation the tradition of Torah im Derech Eretz has eroded more. Once rabbis taught that one should accept personal stringencies while giving others every legitimate leniency. Today young people think the full range of stringencies are standard Halacha and therefore feel imprisoned. This leads to more problems. We need honest, independent Rabbis who can break this cycle. We have more learning, but fewer Gedolim!
