Let's see... what are the potential effects of MORE handouts to the Haredim (in addition to the fact that they don't pay the same taxes or serve in the army)... greater incentive to not work..... greater incentive to live an isolated life away from any kind of mainstream society or societal norm. Not sure how may places on earth subsidize a lifetime of learning, but hell, count me in. I would love for the government to pay for me to get PhD after PhD. Imagine all the fun I could have. Plus, the best part is, I'd never have to work! Goodie Gumdrops... The last time I checked, Israel was not so flush with money that it could afford to pay a double-digit percentage of its population to study for life, while the rest of the country goes to the army, and is completely over-taxed. The only dividend to come out of an investment in a LIFETIME of yeshiva study is further isolation, poverty, and extremism. I tend to prefer the kinds of investments that raise educational standards, housing standards, build better roads, or machines which stop rockets. But hey, seems like they've got it under control in the Knesset...
