In 1948 Israelis fought for their very existence; and rightfully so! It was not until 1967 and the Yom Kippur war soon after that Israel turned away from a morally justifiable path of defending her right to exist and became the aggressive colonial power that threatens the existence of her neighbors. Israeli offense has been re-defined as defense, occupation is defined as defense, illegal settler expansion is defined as defense, forcing troops onto both banks of the Jordan has been defined as defense. Even though Israel has the best armed, best trained army in the Middle East, and it is no longer necessary to make excuses, she still insists that she is defending something and denies her aggressive seizure of land to build Greater Israel. Today, her "defense" has been recognized for what it is: an excuse to grab more and more land which she does not legally possess. Israel has transformed herself from a justified defender of her very existence into an international thief. And she still proclaims that by destroying Palestinian claims she is defending something worthwhile.

Why we don't know how to pick our leaders

Our craving for ideology means that we are partial to ideological leaders. But we need leaders who will make smart decisions that are aligned with the public interest.
