It is odd, so odd, that your family did not notice the many Jews who lived in your midst and were dirt-poor. They sent the money they scraped together from their illegal jobs back to their even more miserable and persecuted relatives in other parts of Europe and further afield, just like today's sans-papiers/zonder papieren from other countries are doing now. Not all Jews were rich, Monique, not during your grandparents' time, not now. I suggest you do a little more research, before everyone who can inform you of what really went on in your country before World War II has passed on. Speak to your countrymen, of whom there were some who risked their own lives trying and sometimes succeeding in saving Jews from the Nazis for no reward at all. They will tell you.
