Sara Hirschhorn's article contains some valid points, but I think that she misses Hass's major contribution. Is it conceivable that Israelis would not resist, were our situation reversed with that of the Palestinians, in the only ways available, given the overwhelming superiority of arms and other resources of the other side? It is perhaps too much to expect that young male Palestinians, having no less an overabundance of testosterone than their Israeli counterparts, will have the sense and maturity to realize the advantage, from their point of view of the kind of passive resistance of the kind so effectively used by Mahatma Gandhi. It seems true that the Palestinian leadership also lacks that maturity as well. But then what can be said of our Israeli leadership's lack of wisdom and good sense? Having successfully contained the Palestinians in a pressure cooker, how much more pressure do they think they can add until the pot boils over.
