The fact that this concert was a great success means no more than that. The power of Charedi leaders over their flock is widely exaggerated and misunderstood by the secular media. There are a number of points here. Firstly the notices telling us going to this concert was a sure route to hell came out after we had bought tickets. Secondly only a couple of the 'big' chassidic Rebbes signed. One of those was the Gerrer whose people would not have gone anyway. No-one outside Ger (and few within) takes any notice of a man who limits sexual relations between young married couples to once a month, except that is the zonot who pick up the slack. Thirdly, the concert was arranged for Charedim with total separation of men and women. Of course it was a great hit - I enjoyed it immensely as did my Yerushalmi wife and her friends.
