Mike, why do more Jews live in other countries than in Israel? Could it be because there is no Western country less safe for Jews since WWII than Israel. Do you know that last year's statistics on Independence Day showed 20,300 soldiers killed in battle. How many more young men have been killed in combat this past year? Do you know that over 1,000 Israelis have been killed just the past 4 1/2 years in violent attacks? Do you know that in other countries Jewish youngsters do not have to face post-traumatic distress because in other countries they can do as they please when the graduate from high school, instead of facing conscription in the military and fighting a largely civilian population? Do you know, additionally, that nearly 1.5 million Israelis live below the poverty line so that Israel's government can continue to build the 'greater Israel', spending $4 million a mile on a proposed 400 mile separation wall (which will not bring security, since missiles fly over walls and tunnels go under), and that the proposed wall is twice as long as had it been built on the 'green line'? Did you know that the government is spending our tax money on building another 6,000 highly subsidized suburban-type homes in the West Bank while 1 of every 5 Israeli children go to bed hungry? Did you know that Israel continues to systematically expropriate Palestinian properties, uproot 1000s of Palestinian olive trees (while being proud of planting trees on Tu B'shvat)? Do you know that the criteria of demography and democracy are antithetical? The only thing that can bring security and peace for Israelis is for our governments (all of them) to stop occupation and the use of force. As Theodore Herzl wisely observed, "Oppression naturally creates hostility against oppressors. The sole hope for a better future for Israelis lies in justice and freedom for Palestinians.
