I posted earlier about having grown up 1 mile from the Mexican border in Texas and wanted to add that out of 150 graduates in my high school class, 47 have the letter Z as part of their last name which is an indicator that they had a paternal ancestor that mostly likely was a Jew who was forced to flee Spain by Queen Isabella in the 1500's. When the Spanish Inquisition spread to Mexico, many of these people naturally fled to the Mexican frontiers, which are now parts of the American states of Texas and New Mexico. I am sure many of your readers are familiar with the New Mexico crypto-Jews, but it is apparent that there were a great many Texas cryptos as well. The descendants of these people are totally ignorant of this part of their history, yet still practiced in my time customs like stopping clocks upon one's death and eating dishes whose recipes are nearly identical to traditional Jewish foods. These people are also extremely successful and have overcome extreme prejudice from white people to become one of America's fastest grown economies. It strikes me as all very ironic.
