Mrs Merkel's statement surprise more than anything Netanyahu does, or says. Mrs M wants patience; 42 years of ILLEGAL settlements were not enough. Maybe the more settlements created, the fewer to remove once peace is at hand! It is clear that the European Union, like USA, is quite comfortable with the growing takeover of Palestinian land. When it has finally made the establishment of a Palestinian state impossible, expect crocodile tears and eulogies in German, French, English etc. There will be no sanctions a la Cuba, Iran and a host of other countries; no assault as with Iraq etc. That one little country could get away for 40 years with a blatant disregard of international law, UN resolutions and plain decency speaks volumes of the lack of a moral compass among countries which we thought know better.

How I learned to fall in love with sanctions

Sanctions did not devastate South Africa or Iran. Nor will they destroy Israel; above all it will extricate Israel from a trap it is unable to get out of by itself.
