Survival? Sorry Maury, survival was always something that Ben Gurion had to make possible to achieve his goal of a progressive, prosperous and successful Israel. Besides, Israel's survival has not been in question since 1973 when the United States told the Soviet Union something about what was being stockpiled . . . Israel has not faced an existential threat for over 30 years. Perhaps that is one reason why the government, including the IDF has become a playground for careerists largely only interested in promoting their own self interest. A 'Grand Strategy" is a goal which you use to shape your actions. With the exception of only Ronald Reagan, the US had a 'Grand Strategy" for dealing with the Soviet Union. That was to contain the Soviet Union until it's systemic problems brought it down. That is why we engaged in the Marshall Plan to strengthen Western Europe's governments. This is why we tried to stabilize the Middle East, and why we invested in Japan and Korea.
