Calley was convicted and his later release was protested by the Army. The guys being tried these days don't have a Nixon in the wings. And Bush was deaf to them, too. Cheney's influence was not universal. No system is perfect. And the general rule is that carrying out an illegal order is more culpable than giving it, when it comes to trials. Fallujah I lead to several trials and not everybody tried got off. That doesn't mean our system is without error. But we do make an effort. And letting the press accompany troops makes it harder to cover anything up, especially when they film it happening.
