we know perfectly well that the highly patriotic and highly ethical jewish captain dreyfus was accused of spying against his country france, when in fact he was perfectly innocent. we know that the real traitor was one eszterhazy, illegitimate descendent of hungarian aristocracy. we know that he attained his position in the army through connections, unlike dryfus who had attained his position through merit. we also know that the ignoble condemnation of captain dreyfus split france, with emil zola penning the famous j'accuse. we also know that the split in france was to remain for over a century. on the one side, the royalists, the army echelon, the catholic church, the industrialists. on the other side many intellectuals, some of the army, as proven during wwii, the workers and the free thinkers--and yes, let us not forget, most jews. let us not forget either that the dryfus affair was reported on in person by the young herzl, thus giving rise to modern zionism.
