1. Yes today there is an economic upswing in Turkey but the recipients are only the handful wealthy businessmen while the working class is still suffering. The country also is extremely dependent on hot foreign cash and the minute the foreign investments leave the economy will fall apart. 2. Only a few weeks ago two elementary school girls were expelled from their schools because the teacher was forcing them to wear an Islamic head scarf. In hospitals female doctors are refusing to treat male patients and vice versa. In the intercity busses seats are assigned so that a man and a woman will not sit next to each other. Busses now are being forced to stop frequently for prayers while there are demands to put prayer compartments in the trains. The liberties of the modern Turk are being restricted slowly. The direction is Iran not EU right now. This is why I understand the concerns of the secular Turk and support him. Economic upswing for the cost of civil liberties is not acceptable.
